guns and kittens p.12We were starting to relax to sit when a conversation broke out... and none of us were the cause of it.
"What?" Milo looked up irritably, only to realize none of us had spoken.
"Oh no, my kitty Milo." An old woman stood there, one of the cats going over and sitting near her feet. I don't know how she stayed alive, or how long she'd been in that room, or how we didn't see her earlier, or if she'd been living off of kittens and chickens. I tried not to think about it, but it bothered all of us that she was so certain her little Milo had been keeping her safe. We were starting to get paranoid, and I think if she'd startled us any more, there wouldn't have been an old woman.
guns and kittens p.11Inside was a white carpet, clean, about five chickens, and four kittens. This was a little weird but we didnt question it, good for them for keeping alive too. I kept the kittens back inside the room while my heavily armed companions made it through the door. I counted our members. Our young bald guy, our tall slender girl with straight blond hair to her shoulders and apparently a soft spot for kittens, Milo, the hefty girl, and two grungy shorter guys who never spoke except to each other, though they'd been with us for what seemed forever. Milo sat heavilly in a wooden chair, his gun near him, and spoke the magic words.
"We'll sleep here tonight."
guns and kittens p.10By the time we made it we were back to six, and one fat girl. We stopped in an old printing press. Puzzle pieces strewn on the floor. It was disgustingly filthy.
"oh, I wouldn't want to live here." our bald young member snickered as he pushed some trash with his foot in a dainty fashion. I sometimes wondered if he was nearing the insanity line that eventually got us all, but he was too quiet most of the time to tell if that's not just the way he was.
"...there's a door in that wall."I said, walking over to a thin seem. The wall was covered by big machinary, and in the darkness no one would have seen it. No one but us at least.
I slid my knife into the crack and wedged it open enough to look inside. I could hope for a safe place, we hadn't slept in days.
guns and kittens p.9Our next choice had nice cover behind a wrecked bus, and was across from an old spanish restraunt, which still had working plumbing. One of the new guys decided to try and use it. This meant he had to cross the street, go inside, and hope we were alone. He hoped alright, but that didn't work. He made it all the way to the stairs and opened the door before a flash light came on our group. We never find out if it's friend or foe with those lights, but we don't care anymore anyways. The moment we see light, six guns turn and unload into it. If it doesn't go away we run, if it does, we move anyways. This one didn't go away. The sounds of men and helicopters started hard and loud on our ears, and we ran.
guns and kittens p.8Somehow while little miss wench was explaining i'd stupidly set my riffle down and now couldn't find it. I was digging through all the guns I could find with Milo standing over my shoulder. Milo wasn't his first name but it was part of it, he's the only one any of us were familiar with.
"Just take this one it's nice." He pulled out a sleek black gun with a scope. I sneered at it.
"No, I like my pump shot, it doesn't kick very bad, that, will kick." Recoil and me didn't get along very well. In the end my father's gun was lost, and I picked up the next closest thing, and headed away from the alley with the others. We'd spent too long there, and if we waited any longer, a spot light would hit us, and then so would a storm of bullets. We headed to the next alley we could reach.
guns and kittens p.7The girl didn't seem to cry, or to do anything but be scared. Maybe she didn't know the guy well, maybe she had had people die around her before, either was she explained there were three of them. She explained that there was a little girl with them, dressed like a skeleton, and now laying dead in the street because someone had shot her as she was laying on the ground to stay low. My face didn't falter, a little girl was no matter, nothing was a matter but survival. Not our group, not anything, not a child...
guns and kittens p.6It was one surprise after the other. Though she didn't scream, here came this rather...heavy, girl in what looked like a poorly made wench costume. I wasn't liking the sheer amount of halloween that I was seeing, was that when this all started? She stared ahead at the body on the ground, and I almost felt the need to say sorry that we'd brutally murdered her friend. The feeling passed though and we went on to asking why she was there. She explained and I felt my group's eyes on me. They'd never say it, but they knew i'd slipped up by letting someone get passed. They wouldn't call me out on it because of the fact that we all knew what we had to do, and we all knew if we messed up we were lucky to be alive. Screaming and bickering about it would do nothing.
guns and kittens p.5I walked the new guys up towards the rest of the group, so they wouldn't get shot at again. Figured i'd make it all the way to the other end before i'd have to worry about anyone else. I didn't, because by the time I made it, a guy had run around a corner and was heading right to us, his bright orange pumpkin shirt making him and easy target. They guys hadn't had to be on guard, they relaxed to much and their aim was sloppy, but their reflexes perfect. The man took two shots, one to the shoulder, and one to the stomach. He was smiling and looking at us, looking at me, as he passed staggering. A civilian. Not someone who came to kill us. I raised my riffle and shot through the back of his head. He didn't have to suffer.
guns and kittens p.4After making sure things are clear on one end, you move over to the other end of the alley. By the time I made it to the other end I was pretty sure there was no one there. I heard rustling as someone was digging through the piles of weapons behind me and grumbling about it. My people didn't make that much noise. I swung around and aimed right at his head. A group of two, male, well near crazy and over fed. After a few shared words, I let them take a weapon and join us. They'd make good meat shields when the time came.
